Call to Action-
Your email to both your State Senator and your State Representative are necessary, as soon as possible, to pass the income tax credit for volunteer/paid on firefighters.
The Tax Conference Committee begins meeting this week and one of the issues to be debated affects almost all of our firefighters.
The Senate bill provides an income tax credit of $450 per volunteer firefighter statewide and ongoing
(cost to state is $8.5 million)
The House bill creates a 3 year pilot project which will provide a $500 stipend for volunteer first responders in 7 southern counties,
Blue Earth, Faribault, Freeborn, Martin, Steele, Waseca and Watonwan. At the end of the pilot the project will be evaluated to determine
Whether it has been effective in assisting the fire service with its recruitment and retention problems.
(cost to state is less than $1 million)
You may click on this link to the summary side-by-side comparison of the two http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/hrd/bs/88/HF3167.pdf (see top of page 1).
We have been lobbying hard on your behalf to get these proposals in the final bills. Your help is now needed to get it passed into law.
We are very grateful to the House for including the pilot project, they took the lead and passed their provision first. However, it would be even better if we provide the benefit statewide, so…..
Please send your two emails today, asking your Senator and Representative to: Support the Senate provision providing an income tax credit for volunteer firefighters/first responders statewide.
